Thanksgiving Food Baskets
A new ministry for us this year, we are partnering with the Church of South Washington to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to 150 families in the community. Most of the families on this list come from the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, which helps provide low-income rental properties in the City of Alexandria. We are also working with ALIVE!, who will be delivering all of the shelf-stable food products for the food baskets. Each food basket will contain all of the Thanksgiving Day staples, including potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, and corn.
There are three ways you can participate in the food basket ministry:
1) We need people to deliver food baskets. We need 10 - 20 delivery vehicles; each person will be asked to pick up food baskets and deliver them on Sunday, November 22, from 3:00 - 5:00pm. Each delivery will include 5-7 families, grouped within a small geographic region. Almost all of our deliveries will be in the Old Town area.
2) We need food basket packers. Packers will be asked to help prepare the food baskets for delivery on Sunday, November 22, from 1:00 - 3:00pm. We'll have an assembly line set-up, which should make for light work (we only need 3 - 5 folks to help with packing). We have been given permission to use the Demaine's Funeral Home parking lot, so this work (weather permitting) will be outdoors.
3) We need a few donations. While ALIVE! is providing most of our shelf stable foods, we are asking for some produce donations (onions and celery), some dessert donations (pies or cake mixes), and a few turkeys. WSUMC is also providing the bins to pack the food, so we could use some financial donations to the Missional Community Fund (you can give online here).
