In 2010 there were no walk-in breakfast programs for the homeless or low-income families in Alexandria. Knowing that breakfast is a very important meal and that Washington Street UMC had a desire to be engaged in offering God’s love in the community, the church started Open Table.
Open Table is held each Monday morning at Washington Street UMC from 6:00-8:00am. A second location opened up at Old Presbyterian Meeting House, and serves breakfast on Thursday mornings from 6:00-8:00am.
Open Table is dedicated to providing guests with a healthy breakfast that consists of hot coffee, fresh fruit, hot and cold cereal, hard-boiled eggs, meat, cheese, bread, yogurt, juice, water and healthy snacks and lunch sandwiches to take away! Some of our breakfast servants also prepare quiche, breakfast sandwiches, and other hot foods throughout the year.
Travel-sized personal hygiene items and a few clothing items are also available to guests as needed.
Not only does the breakfast ministry provide food and necessary items to those in need, but it also provides a great place to share in Christ’s love and in community with any who join for breakfast over a shared meal.
There are a number of ways to serve at and provide needed materials for the Open Table ministry. You are always welcome to serve on Monday mornings (anytime between 5:45 and 8:30 a.m. — you DO NOT have to be here the entire time). Others are needed to pick up items from Starbucks and Brueggers on Sunday evenings, donate personal hygiene items, donate perishable and non-perishable food, and make monetary donations (which are used to purchase food) by writing a check to “WSUMC” with “Open Table” in the memo line. Whether you serve with or at Open Table or not, we ask that you lift up the ministry, its guests, and its servants in prayer.
