About the Youth Ministry
It is the desire of Washington Street to see the youth in the community own and live out their faith in Christ, now and when they finish with their schooling career. We want to see them have relationships with other students, adults, and ultimately Jesus Christ. Because of this, we want everything we do to be intentional in creating those environments. It is our goal to help the youth find their calling from God to be engaged, caring, and faithful disciples.
What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is the time when a personal decision is made to confirm the vows of our baptism. This happens as a group of students join together to explore who Christ is, what it means to know Him through a life-long relationship, and how we follow Him as United Methodists. Confirmation is a small group based program for students in grades 9 and above who wish to be confirmed in the United Methodist Church.
Confirmation ends with a ceremony during Sunday morning worship, which allows the confirmands to make their first public affirmation of faith in Christ as being their own faith. The Confirmand is taking responsibility for living as a member of the body of Christ and for fulfilling God’s purposes. This includes the building of relationships with peers and adults who will support them in their faith.
Confirmation is not simply a “rite of passage.” Nor, just a class to complete. It is a step in a life-long journey of pursuing the heights, depths and widths of God’s love and making a vow to live in relationship with God for the rest of our lives!
Mentors are needed to journey alongside these confirmands. Mentors help lead a small group of students through provided curriculum. Training and all supplies are provided. Mentors are not expected to have all the answers, but should be willing to walk along side the youth as they seek to find their own.
Confirmation is offered in the Spring of each calendar year.
If you are interested in being confirmed in the faith at Washington Street UMC, or would like more information about serving as a confirmation mentor, please contact Pastor Thomas via email or at the church office – 703-836-4324.
For a number of years, youth and adults from Washington Street UMC have traveled to western North Carolina to join with other church groups in Carolina Cross Connection’s summer mission program. CCC is a year round, Christ-centered ministry that connects the local church to those who are in need both in their own backyards and overseas. We work with youth leaders, churches and parents to raise compassionate, servant-hearted, next-generation leaders.
CCC combines the spiritual connection of a camp-like experience with the life-changing opportunities that week-long service trips offer. Their priority is to see Christ-followers developing servant hearts and making a difference in this world!
To learn more about Carolina Cross Connection, visit their website at http://carolinacrossconnection.org. To participate in a future CCC trip, please contact the church office.
In recent years, youth from Washington Street UMC have gathered together with youth from other United Methodist Churches in Alexandria for social and discipleship outings. If you are a youth or have a youth who would like to be involved in upcoming events, please contact the church office for more information about upcoming opportunities.
