Have you ever wondered why the church exists? What is our purpose in the world today? If we can answer these foundational questions about our existence as a community, we then have to wonder, how do we live into that vision of existence? Are we structured in a way that facilitates the mission of the church? Over these eight weeks, we will ask these questions and consider their answers for the future of Washington Street UMC in Alexandria, VA. We will look at what it takes to reframe the church in such a way that we are ready to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world today. While looking at everything from our leadership, to church structure, to metrics, to financial allocation, The Quest will invite us to transform the church into a leading body of God’s love in the community.
You’re invited to join in The Quest as we consider together God’s call on our life as a community of faith, seeking to grow in faith with one another, and making a place for everyone to know God’s love.

The Church’s Story
September 15, 2019
The Church has a story to tell – but not every part of the story is appealing. WSUMC began as a Methodist Episcopal Church South, with a clear claim that we did not desire to be a place for everyone in the community. As we celebrate our 170th Anniversary in Alexandria, we will proclaim the good news that our future is not defined by our past, but that in the gospel proclamation of the resurrection, we give thanks to God that greater days are ahead.

One of the ways we are called to transform the church for the purpose of making God’s love known is to rethink the leadership structure of the church. Do we exist to serve and worship a pastor, or Jesus Christ? Are we inviting people to share God’s love, or to keep tabs on our finances and property? How does an outward focused church structure itself to invite greater community support?

The church is not called to operated independently from its community. It is called to serve as a spark to give life and light to the community. How can WSUMC be a support for those who are already doing good work in our midst?
October 6, 2019
The church needs small groups and faithful disciples to lead the ministry. From personal discipleship, to service projects, to community strength, the vitality of small groups will lead the church in a more faithful path forward.
Living the Gospel
October 13, 2019
Evangelism has a bad reptuation, but at our core, evangelism is who we are as Christians. What does faithful, right, Kingdom Laboring look like today?
Cutting the Anchor
October 20, 2019
Church today does not have to reflect the church of the past. We are not limited to being tomorrow who we were yesterday – that’s the gift of new life in Christ! What creative way – what innovative way – will we dream to make God’s love known for everyone?

What if vitality in the church wasn’t measured by butts in the pews and dollars in the plate? What if our quest is not to get more people to us – but to live more authentically in relationship with those around us? The call of Christ is not to maintain power over others, but to give life to the world.
