Ways to Give

Your giving is an act of worship and makes possible the ministry of changing lives, transforming communities and renewing the church. Giving to the church, be it of your time, your talents, or your treasures, should be seen as a response to the gift of love and life God has given you in Jesus Christ. You are invited to celebrate the joy of generosity and you are encouraged to find greater contentment and simplicity in your life as you put God first in your giving and living.

We ask every member of our church family to return a Financial Giving Commitment Card. It is an act of worship to prayerfully consider giving and make a commitment to serve the Lord financially. Additionally, stating an anticipated commitment helps the church create a budget for our ministries, key objectives, and mission outreach programs. You can fill out your 2022-2023 Estimate of Giving here.

Along with financial giving, there are many ways to give in the church and community to help provide for the needs of our neighbors. Learn more about what kinds of clothing, food, and other needs you can help provide on the In Kind Gifts page.

Online Giving

Online giving is quick and easy using a debit or credit card, or your bank account. You can make a one-time gift or set up a recurring gift through our online giving partner, PushPay.

Gifts of Stock

Appreciated stock can be given to the church. By giving stock directly, the giver pays no capital gains tax and receives a tax-deduction for the fair-market value of the donation.

IRA Donations

Those who are at least 70 1/2 years old can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) direct from their IRA that counts toward their required minimum distribution.

Memorial Gifts

A memorial gift is a thoughtful way to celebrate the life and faith of a loved one. For more information on giving a memorial gift, contact Ann Cary McLain in the Church Office.

Online Giving

Washington Street UMC uses PushPay as our online giving partner. Using the PushPay giving site, you can make financial gifts to the church using debit and credit cards, or using an ACH transfer (direct from your checking account). You do not have to be a member of the church or have an online account to use the PushPay giving platform – all you need is a phone number or email to give.

Using the PushPay giving platform, you can make a one-time gift, or you can set up a recurring gift.

Processing Fees

There are minimal fees deducted from the church’s account by PushPay for online processing. These fees are accounted for in the church’s annual budget. However, if you would like to cover the cost of the processing fees, you can opt to give an additional 2.2%, which will be included in your tax-deductible amount.

Edit or Cancel a Recurring Gift

To edit or cancel a recurring gift, you need to log-in to PushPay or MyWSUMC. In PushPay, your recurring gift should be accessible from the homepage after logging in, and can be edited or cancelled. In MyWSUMC, after accessing the giving page, click “Schedules / History” at the top of the screen. To note: Using MyWSUMC, you can cancel recurring gifts and set up new gifts, but you cannot edit current recurring gifts.

Cash or Checks

Gifts of cash or checks are a common form of giving to the church. Checks should be made payable to Washington Street UMC.

Cash and checks can be:

  • Dropped in the offering plate on Sunday mornings
  • Brought to the locked church mailbox (left side of building) or the church office
  • Mailed to:
    Washington Street UMC
    109 S. Washington Street
    Alexandria, VA 22314
Gifts of Stock

Donating appreciated stock is an easy way to offer financial support to Washington Street UMC. Upon receipt of stocks and securities, the church will transfer the resulting cash to the appropriate fund.

If you would like to donate to Washington Street UMC through a stock transfer, email the church office at [email protected] for transfer instructions.

If not specified, the funds will be transferred into the General Ministry Fund. You may alternatively choose to have the stock gift transferred to the Endowment Fund, Missional Community Fund, Discipleship Fund, or Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.

By donating appreciated stock to any registered 501(c)3 organization, you are able to avoid paying capital gains taxes, while still being able to deduct the full fair-market value of the gift being made from your income taxes.

Memorials

Memorial giving is a meaningful way to remember our loved ones. You can give a gift in memory of a family member, neighbor, co-worker, or church member.

To give a donation in memory of an individual, please indicate your gift as a memorial, naming in whose memory the gift is being given. Please also indicate the name of the person or family giving the gift, and a contact phone number and address for the person giving the gift. The Office Manager will record the gift in our church records, and send a note to the family of the deceased indicating a memorial gift has been made.

You can mail your memorial gift to:
Washington Street UMC
c/o Memorials
109 S. Washington Street
Alexandria, VA 22314

You can also make a memorial gift online using our online giving portal. After making your online gift, please contact the Office Manager to indicate in whose memory the gift is being given.

Planned Giving

Planned giving offers a foundation for the long-term impact of the church. Whether through estate bequests, insurance policies, real-estate gifts, or others, your planned giving can offer a foundation for years of fruitful ministry to come through the Endowment Fund.

If you would like to set up a planned gift to Washington Street UMC, you’re encouraged to contact the church office using the Planned Giving Intent Form that will guide the use of your gift to the endowment.
